February 2013 Newsletter

solidThinking February Newsletter

Welcome to the second newsletter of a busy year so far for the solidThinking team. This month, among other exciting events it was great to see our parent company, Altair, featured in the Forbes magazine article Bone-Based Software Improves How We Design, From Detergent To Tanks. The reporter also gives a hint as to what is coming next in a future version of solidThinking Inspire.

DEVELOP3D Review of Inspire 9.0

This month UK based DEVELOP3D featured a review of solidThinking Inspire 9.0 by the magazine’s Editor-in-Chief & Co-Founder Al Dean. Al opened his article with a question “Digital optimisation is often done within the bounds of an existing design, using parametric variation techniques. But what if you want to explore potential design options with a little more freedom?” and offered up Inspire as a possible solution.

One highlight of the article is a clear description of the Inspire workflow represented as a panel of 6 images. The review also touches on some details of the underlying technology within the software and the user interface. Al concluded that Inspire could help design engineers explore new design directions and “think differently”.

Making Light of Heavy Lifting

Anhui Heli, has manufactured material handling equipment since 1958 and is one of the largest manufacturers of forklifts in the world. The company recently challenged their design engineers to create a more material efficient forklift steer axle using Inspire through an internal contest.

The 10 entrants used Inspire to create an initial geometry, which was interpreted in CAD before strength and stiffness validation using finite element simulation. The winning design engineer was Ye Fei, his redesigned part weighed 10% less than the original part. He said, “[The] design of the new part is better than original one significantly” he added that he expects Inspire to used more widely to improve design quality and performance at Heli.

We’ve Inspired a Student Design Contest

ASME BITS Pilani in India are running a competition as part of their Apogee Annual Technical Festival that will provide students with an opportunity to display their engineering skills by optimizing a well-defined 3D model. These young design engineers and architects will use Inspire to generate and explore structurally efficient concepts in the earliest phases of the design process. Each contestant will be provided with an Inspire license and receive online training.

Your Chance to see Evolve 9.5

The solidThinking team will be attending 3 of the IDSA regional conferences in April. These events:
(Central District Conference 12-13 in Cleveland, OH,
Western District Conference 12-13 in Long Beach, CA
Northeast District Conference 19-20 in Hartford, CT)
will be a chance for attendees to see the new features in Evolve 9.5.

The 9.5 enhancements to Evolve include new selection aids, such as, pre-highlighting, micro-dialogs, and direct hull selection that simplifies geometry creation and makes editing more intuitive. The construction history is now more visually refined and robust. A new Sweep tool and a new Blend Curve tool have been added to provide more modeling control and an easier workflow. Plus a new 64-bit Windows version maximizes efficiency in managing large files.

We hope to see you there!

February Tip & Trick for Evolve

vid

This month, Darren Chilton will guide Evolve users through some animation basics. Animation in Evolve is based on a simple but powerful technique called Key Framing. Darren explains the attributes that you can animate for an object (translation, rotation and scale) and for the camera (position and target) with an easy to follow example.
